Internet dating has obviously been around for a while. People meet each other online, develop a relationship, fall in love and all that happens even when they have never seen each other in real life. I've been wondering about it from time to time, thinking that it must be sort of strange to get online with an intention of finding a date. But the world is pretty crazy so I guess that was another one of it's quirks. The issue came to my attention again when more people in church started "dating" online and me and Erik know of a few couples who got married that way. I've never heard any opinions officially expressed about it among the believers: was it right or wrong, good or bad, approved or disapproved. And it is in fact hard to draw a distinct line between the two, but what do people really think about it?
One of the red flags I see with Internet dating is that online you can be anyone you would like to be. I can tell people that I'm a blond and I love skydiving. I can make up stories and live in a "made up" world. There's no boundaries. Seems like the reason so many retreat to Internet relationship is that they can finally be the people they've always wanted to be: fun, outgoing, beautiful, successful. But then how can you ever be sure that the person you are "dating" is not a flake?
I started writing this because one of the ladies in our Bible study is involved in one of those relationships. And unfortunately she's blind to a lot of things that are going on and would not listen to any advice of caution from her friends. I think we all need to be on guard and discern situations when people can fall into a trap like that.
